how did it happen?

Silbercow was set-up in 2002 by Martin Parker after several years of working in arts and educational organisations and as a freelance designer, including:

• Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design
• Latymer Upper School
• Fruitmarket Gallery

Martin has also worked as a Student Teacher in Tollcross Primary School (Edinburgh), as a Summer School Teacher (Edinburgh Council), and as a Playleader for Westminster Play Association (London). Martin has been working in graphic design on a professional and voluntary basis since leaving school at 16.

why silbercow?

“I wanted to conjure up in people’s minds an idea of a design style that is simple, creative and elegant, while still being warm and human”.

so why silbercow?

• Cow as a metaphor is, a strong, long-lasting and reliable creature.
• Cows are an inquisitive animal.
• Cows, like humans, are incredible parents and have an exceptionally strong bond with their off-spring. Also, like humans, they are excellent teachers.

Silbercow’s logo is based on a calf, a young creature still developing and learning. Silbercow as a name brings together two languages German (silber – pronounced ‘zilber’) and English (cow) in the same way design brings together the different languages of image and text. Silver is a common, yet precious metal, bright and hard wearing and one which never fades to fashion. Cows are just lovely.

why specialise?

"Art and Education are important and I have extensive experience in these areas over a number of years. These are areas that continue to interest me, because access to art, and especially arts education should be available to everyone. One of my primary aims for Silbercow is to work with and support Arts and education organisations by providing them with a useful and budget-friendly service".
